Should I keep my goldfish pond pump on always?

Does anyone know how much electricity the pond pump pulls? Will it make a major impact on our electricity bill if we leave it on always?

How to stop frogs being ****** into the pump in the pond?
Posted on January 22, 2010 Filed Under Garden & Landscape | 5 Comments
We have a draper pond pump and around this time of year frogs are constantly being ****** into it and obviously dying. We’ve tried wrapping it in firm mesh but no luck. Any other solutions?
Chicken wire is what we’ve already tried.
I will suggest the colander and aluminium screening ideas to my dad (he’s the pond-sorter-outer, I’m the pro-frog-activist / messenger!) – thanks guys!

How can I prevent my pond pump from killing frogs?
Posted on January 21, 2010 Filed Under Garden & Landscape | 6 Comments
I think they try to sleep in the area where the pump rests and get ****** in. I really like frogs, and if I have to tug one more mangled body out of the pump I’m going to be sick. Also, they clog the pump.
Is there some kind of protective cage I can buy or make to put over it that will let smaller debris through, but keep the froggies out? I’ve looked and looked in catalogs, but can’t find anything, and I can’t imagine I’m the only person with this problem.

Anyone familiar with tetra pond pond pump troubleshooting?
Posted on January 20, 2010 Filed Under Maintenance & Repairs | 3 Comments
I have a Tetra pond 2500 pump( above ground and a submersible part) it was running fine all spring and summer until today, it acts as if there is no power going to it, although there are no GFIs tripped and there is power at the outlet. Is there a sensor or somthing that would cause this? Or possibly a way to reset the pump? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Pond Pump?
Posted on January 16, 2010 Filed Under Do It Yourself (DIY) | 3 Comments
We are considering adding a garden to our backyard, and we understand we need a pump. The place where we want the pond is too far away from the house to be grid powered. We considered solar and wind powered pumps, but we don’t have enough sun or wind. I was wondering if there is a working perpetual machine, such as a perpetual water wheel. If so, can u send me a picture/video. THANKS!!!

How can I restore the flow for my koi pond waterfall pump?
Posted on January 16, 2010 Filed Under Garden & Landscape | 2 Comments
I moved into a house with a large koi pond over the summer. The waterfall used to flow quite strongly, but now the flow is very weak. Even when I run the water straight from the pump to the waste tube (bypassing the filter and waterfall), there’s not much flow. I emptied out the leaf basket that sits just before the pump, but that didn’t help. What else should I try?
Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, the flow is much weaker now than when I first moved in (even when it was running through the filter, but especially when it was bypassing the filter). I don’t think it’s settling — my guess is there’s something stuck in the pipe between the drain and the pump, or maybe the pump is dying.

What does a fish tank/pond water pump do?
Posted on January 16, 2010 Filed Under Fish | 3 Comments
I am planning to build a koi fish pond, and I know I need a water pump. All I know is that a water pump will circulates water. Does it do anything else? does it act like a filter? does it provide aeration or oxygen to the pond?

When is a good time to turn off a pond pump?
Posted on January 13, 2010 Filed Under Fish | 3 Comments
I listened to someone’s advice and turned it off when it reached below 50 degrees and resulted in sludge and decaying mess in the bottom of the pond. 4 out of 5 fish (all less than 4 inches long) are now dead. I think the pond needs to continue circulating throughout the winter months to keep the water clear and clean, but I’m not sure. This is my first winter with this pond, which is approximately 300 gallons. Help!
I live in Texas, so it doesn’t freeze a lot here. We have a few days in the 30’s here, but ponds don’t usually freeze over. The water stays flowing. Do I have to turn my pump off? Or, can I let it run all year?
