Why is my pond pump using more electricity?

I have a blagdon solid handling pond pump, over the last few days i have lost about 8 pounds in electricity, so i tried unplugging many things but when i unplugged the fish pond then the electricity stopped going down as fast. Why would the pump use so much electricity?

How much does it usually cost to install/repair a new pond pump?
