I know tiles are much more expensive than paint. But i fear that if i paint the pond it would affect the fish. I’m planning to maybe put tiles in some parts ot the bottom. Not entirely cuz it would be expensive. What other suggestions do you have for pond floors? should i just leave it be with plain cement? paint it? or place tiles on it?

I’ve constructed a fish pond in my backyard that is approx. 18′x8′ and 3′ deep at its deepest point. We constructed it out of concrete (4″ thick) set in three pours. First problem – pond leaks. Bad. Losing about 40 gallons a day or so. I’ve sealed the seams and painted in the pond sealant, but it still leaks. So rather than spend time trying to fix the concrete I’m just going to lay a rubber liner over it.

First question – Can I use old carpeting as an underlayment between the concrete and the liner to prevent chafe? I know there is a fancy underlayment on the market but I have three rolls of carpet that are free, so I’d rather use that.

Second Problem – As soon as the liner is in we want to add fish, but we don’t have a pump/filter yet. We are constructing a solar system with batteries and pumps that will be buried, but we won’t have the system up and running till this winter.

Second question – Is there a cheap (under 150 dollar) AC pump and filter that we can get started with?

We’ve been working on this for six months now and I just want to get it to a point I can work on the rest of the backyard. I’m sick of looking at this bare concrete pit. Anyone done a budget pond this big?
Yeah, dug the hole. Hole leaks. Can’t keep fish alive in a hole that leaks.
