Do you have a pond with gold fish?

MadforMAC asked:
I recently put a small pond in my yard, stocking it with gold fish. I use AquaSafe (neutralized chlorine and heavy metals, helps with protective slime coating of fish) because I have hard water. No pump because it’s in the farthest end of my backyard (no electricity out there!).

Cleaning it almost weekly because the alge builds (a pain to do). I have a couple of small plants in the pond, had a snail that died. It’s covered at night to keep out racoons and everybody else that likes a snack at midnight. Gets full sun most days.
Any suggestions for a cleaner pond? Other fish? Food? (I use Gold Fish Crumbles) I live in a place that has cold weather 4-6 months out of the year too.

Nope, but I got a mudhole with crawfish.
First off you need a pump to move the water. Running the water through a small fountain or waterfall cools and oxygenates the water. This helps discourage algae growth. If you have gold fish, you don’t need to feed them. They will eat the algae of the plants and sides. Snails help, however they can overrun the thing in no time.
They make a product out of (I think) barley straw. It floats in a little cartridge thingy. The algae is drawn to grow on the straw instead of the pond walls so it helps keep down the amount growing in the pond.
Go talk to a pond expert at the local greenhouse or pond supply.
The pond from this will be best option.
Put more plants in! They help keep it clean, add oxygen, and the golfish love them. When first starting the pond, you can feed the fish, then stop once the algae gets going. They will eat plants, algae, bugs, and grow HUGE over a summer, and most likely breed. Clean ponds are usually unhealthy ponds. Just like in nature. If you can see to the bottom, you are cleaning too much. If you stick your arm in the water to your elbow, and can just barely see your hand, you have a healthy pond.
