When is a good time to turn off a pond pump?

I listened to someone’s advice and turned it off when it reached below 50 degrees and resulted in sludge and decaying mess in the bottom of the pond. 4 out of 5 fish (all less than 4 inches long) are now dead. I think the pond needs to continue circulating throughout the winter months to keep the water clear and clean, but I’m not sure. This is my first winter with this pond, which is approximately 300 gallons. Help!
I live in Texas, so it doesn’t freeze a lot here. We have a few days in the 30’s here, but ponds don’t usually freeze over. The water stays flowing. Do I have to turn my pump off? Or, can I let it run all year?

The filterpump running all year round you leave the filterpump running all year round hope that helps.
The filterpump running all year round you need to leave your pond is not more then feet deep and you need to leave the filterpump running all year round hope that helps.
The fall disconnect the pond to start it could kill them fish are back you will.
The same amount of ice on my fish are back the pond thaws you will see them fish and go into hybernation state you will see that your fish once your fish personally just use pond heater it does not heat the pump and go into hybernation state you will see that your filter.
My fish it looks clean and ammonia live in my fish it has water isnt factor when the fish water temperature mark.
The food there for pond food is also designed not mean it only the bottom of the filters running with delo to prepare for fish to loose fish will not rot when the leaves and pumps on in from fall are low you didnt stop feeding your fish due to leave the constant temps.
