Why are my fish dying?

pond paint
Jess asked:

I had 12 goldfish in an outdoor pond for about the last 5 or 6 years and have never had a problem, all of a sudden they have started dying. They begin with bulging eyes and appear bloated around the belly and then die within a day. About a month ago we resurfaced the pond with a pond paint that is supposed to be safe for fish, is this a disease or could it be a problem with their new environment?
