Turtle Pond – want to convert a shallow ornamental pond into one for “critters” – suggestions?

Posted on September 7, 2008 - Filed Under Reptiles

DrJunk asked:

Moved into a house with a very shallow 12′ x 5′ pond (almost dries up if it doesn’t rain in a week), with a liner topped by basic stone (about 1″ diameter “river rock” type stuff). It does have a very basic “pump/waterfall” but thats it. What steps or process would I need to undertake to convert into something suitable for fish, turtles etc.? I would like to do this as inexpensively as possible. I live in Indiana and already have some sliders, crawdads, minnows etc. in a 125 gallon tank…

The better fence it or protect it deeper in some place it deeper in some place it or hawks include hibernation sitebeach the size is the most expensive repair.

if its shallow check out mud or musk turtles… they do well in shallow water and stay relitivly small compaired to red ear sliders.

you will need to dig out one end at least and make a deeper pond
if you want to keep fish and it needs to be deep enough so that it won’t freeze solid in the winter
